More Evidence for the Healing Powers of Honey

honey2

Canker sores are definitely a pain. Doctors don’t know what causes these painful lesions, but new research published in the journal Quintessence International indicates that we may be able to cure them with a classic kitchen staple: honey. The journal recounts a study comparing canker sores treated topically with honey to traditional over-the-counter and prescription remedies. Within 24 hours, honey users reported that they were mostly pain-free. After four days the sores treated with honey had disappeared completely, while there was no notable change from the other treatments.

The results from this report are no surprise. Honey is a well known healing agent, its an anti-inflammatory that helps relieve swelling and pain. It is also anti-microbial and can help in new tissue generation and wound healing. So, next time you find yourself with a canker sore, head to the kitchen for fast relief. Rinse the inflamed area with clean water and dry with a bit of paper towel. Apply honey liberally with a cotton swab several times a day and hopefully you will see results by the next day.

Sri Lankan Teas

tiny

Did you know that Sri Lanka once shared a name with the tea that it is now famous for? The tiny island nation was called Ceylon until the end of British Colonialism in 1948. Sri Lanka is no larger than the state of Indiana, yet it boasts the fourth highest volume of tea production in the world. Sri Lanka’s tea quality can be attributed to a climate favorable to tea production: humidity, cool temperatures, and rainfall.

We have recently begun to carry some wonderful new Sri Lankan teas that we are so excited to be able to offer. Check out the list below for details on some of our newest teas!

Sri Lankan Vintage- A smokey amber brew with a hint of sweet-potato, this new tea blend consists of 3 separate teas. It is sure to appeal to the tea-adventurer in search of novel tea experiences.

Govenor’s Sri Lankan- This award-winning Ceylon tea is produced in limited quantities by a single family-owned estate in Sri Lanka. Two whole leaves and one bud from the plant’s tips are harvested, then hand-rolled into a ring to make this tea.

Sri Lankan Golden Tips– This top-shelf tea uses only hand-picked, very young, tender tips of select tea bushes. The leaf has a light, golden color that is velvety with fine white down. This prized tea has a smooth, sweet taste that tea novices and connoisseurs alike will love.

Yaupon Tea!

We’re excited to be carrying a new kind of tea! Yaupon!

Yaupon Tea (Yow-Pon) (Ilex Vomitoria) is a type of holly plant native to southeastern North America. It is a small tree or shrubbery with glossy dark green leaves. The fruit growing off the branches are small and red. The fruit are an important form of nutrition to many bird species such as duck, quail, turkey, bluebirds and others. Black bear, fox, raccoon, skunks, and deer also eat the fruit!

Ilex_DwarfYaupon300

The leaves and stems are brewed to make the tea. The yaupon plant was prized among Native American tribes in southern Florida. The tea was used for male-only purification and unity rituals.

The tea has ingredients such as caffeine and theobromine, making it different from other caffeine free herbal teas. It gives the drinker a boost without the jittery after affect!

It also offers health benefits such as high anti-oxidant levels, anti-inflammatory properties, and aids in prevention of osteoporosis!

Try it in its traditional holly, roasted, or blended with various other herbal teas. It’s delicious hot or iced. We even made an iced tea lemonade out of our coconut-lavender blend!

Come in and try a cup, or buy some by the ounce to enjoy at home.

Relief for Super Chapped Lips

lips3 (1)

Summer sun or cool weather winds can leave lips feeling tender and chapped. Before you reach for the chap-stick, try this all-natural remedy that will condition & heal hurting lips, leaving the skin soft and healthy. The tannin in Green Tea

soothes burned skin while anti-oxidants & poly-phenols combat inflammation and heal irritated lips. Applying tea to chapped lips can actually be more effective than traditional chap-sticks, as chap-sticks often contain harmful or irritating

ingredients like petro-chemicals and substances that can act as allergens. Dampen a soft cloth in a strong brew of green tea (1-2 TBS of loose leaf tea per 6 oz of hot water), allow cloth to cool to a luke-warm or cool temperature before

applying to lips. Hold cloth to lips for 5-10 minutes.  If no loose-leaf tea is available, tea bags may be used instead.
