Who Is This Guy???

earl grey

We love Earl Grey tea – in fact, our current tea of the day is Lavender Earl Grey. But who was Earl Grey and why is one of the world’s most beloved teas named after this man? Earl Grey tea, it turns out, was named after the 2nd Earl Grey who was British Prime Minister from 1830-1834. He is celebrated for the abolition of slavery through the Reform Bill of 1832 which was passed during his term. Why does the bergamot-infused black tea carry his namesake? Legend has it that one of Grey’s men rescued the son of a Chinese mandarin from drowning in 1803, and the man then presented the tea blend to the Earl as a symbol of his gratitude. Whether or not this story is true, we’re grateful for the existence of Earl Grey tea. We love it so much that we serve traditional Black Earl Grey, as well as Lavender Earl Grey, Green Earl Grey, and White Earl Grey!

Frozen Summit Tea and the Art of Oolongs

There are a great number of steps in the making of oolongs, more than any other tea. This makes oolongs one of the most complex teas to create. Their flavor ranges from mild and floral to strong and toasty, depending on the special techniques used to create each tea. Oolong tea has been found to increase metabolism, reduce high blood pressure, boost the immune system, and support dental health.

LP has chosen one of our favorite oolongs for this week’s tea pick: Frozen Summit.  This is a roasted, hand-rolled tea from Taiwan, with clear, crisp, floral notes. This tea can be infused many times and as the tea steeps, the tightly rolled leaves unfurl to show whole leaf tips and buds.

Only the newly-sprouted leaf tips are plucked to make Frozen Summit. They are allowed to wither, and then are roasted and rolled up tight.

Rescue chapped hands!

Our hands are often abused by the harsh soaps and sanitizers we use, leaving the skin stripped of moisture.  The solution? Hydrate and soften your hands with Savannah Bee Company’s Tupelo Honey Hand Soap! Did you know that honey has natural antiseptic properties?  Other ingredients, such as aloe vera repair the skin while cleansing, reduce redness, and soothe the skin as they hydrate. Its mildly sweet honey fragrance makes for a delicious lather!

To further hydrate and protect the skin, be sure to follow with Savannah Bee Company’s Beeswax Hand Cream. Propolis and Royal Jelly replenish and repair skin.  This peach scented lotion is creamy and packed with anti-oxidants which help to restore the skin.

These products and many others are available to try out and purchase in our shop. Come by Soakology today and check them out!

Echinacea Honeybush, a Cold Season Staple

DSC_0357

The immune-boosting powers of Echinacea have been widely publicized.  We blend this dried herb into our South African Honeybush tea to make a delicious infusion with a sweet aroma and a straw-like flavor reminiscent of honey.  Honeybush is a red tea, or Rooibos tea that is healthful, strengthening, and full of Vitamin C, Iron, Potassium, Calcium, and Zinc.  It’s a great “go-to” tea for the common cold.

Here is a great tea blend that can be made as a cold/flu season remedy or preventative tonic: Use about a teaspoon of Echinacea honeybush.  Add a little Ginger tea and Lemon Myrtle, a pinch of cayenne pepper, a slice of lemon, and honey to sweeten to taste.
